Lent is the 40-day period of repentance and renewal which precedes Easter. (Sundays are not included in the 40 days, as each Sunday is "a little Easter.") During these 40 days we re-live in a small way the 40 days Christ spent in the wilderness following his baptism. The liturgical color for Lent is purple, signifying the penitence, humility and suffering which we choose to endure as we reflect on Christ’s sacrifice to come. This is the basis for the spiritual disciplines of almsgiving, fasting and prayer that Christians observe during the Lenten season.

Ash Wednesday service

On Wednesday, February 17, we will mark the beginning of Lent with a service of worship, communion and the imposition of ashes at 7 p.m. in the Sanctuary. During the Ash Wednesday service, we come in humility with penitent spirits to begin the journey to Easter. Holy Communion is celebrated as a sign of the resurrection to come and the sign of the cross is made on all believers. Traditionally the palm branches used on Palm Sunday of the previous year are burned and the ashes used that we may "remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return."
